Review: Rebuild Protein Recovery Blend by Tailwind Nutrition

unnamed.jpg

Tailwind Nutrition is a pretty seriously dope brand based out of Durango, CO. Their focus is on glycogen + electrolyte + energy replenishment for endurance athletes.

I have a full marathon and several halfs under my belt; and running is still a regular part of my training. However, most of my time is spent in a Crossfit gym.

The first Tailwind product I tried (Endurance Fuel-pictured in the orange bag) is awesome game day fuel. I also see it as a great source of readily-absorbed carbs for right when I wrap up a hard workout. Through my experience with grueling crossfit workouts. I’ve learned that my body + recovery respond really well to carb backloading. In other words, right after a workout my focus is carbs and water. Doing this right after a workout helps you bounce back and hormones in check (also prevents your cortisol levels from staying up).

That said, protein is super important for my sport as well. I’m not someone who advocates a ton of animal protein consumption, in fact I always take vegan protein with the exception of collagen and beef bone broth. I love that this Rebuild blend by Tailwind packs 10g of protein per serving, while also giving your body the carbs it needs to replenish your energy stores.

unnamed (1).jpg

The ingredients are clean, and I like the choice to use rice protein, as it’s vegan and also is one of the most bioavailable proteins (easily absorbed and used by your body). This blend also features several amino acids that aid in recovery. You can tell they thought about this one!

Taste wise, I found both blends to be light and milky tasting, definitely pleasant. Though they have a carb content, they don’t taste super sweet. I would add some almond or hemp milk to it for optimum flavor + thickness + satiety. I’d say definitely drinkable with just water though.

My boyfriend, who is a Crossfit + Track & Field coach, was my second set of taste buds. He said he definitely enjoy it more when mixed with a plant based milk for a little more body and sweetness.

Tailwind is still in Beta with this product, and I’m just stoked that I have had the priviledge to try it first! It will be available SO SUPER SOON THOUGH (March 12th!) through their website.

Endurance athletes who are looking for a dose of protein are in for a treat. It’s the same great Tailwind quality just with more of recovery bang. I’d also recommend it to anyone doing high intensity training who is looking for a carb + protein duo to keep in their gym bag.

My Thoughts:

These bars have awesome flavors, that are awesomely named, with an awesome company name, containing awesome ingredients. If you can’t tell, I think these bars are pretty awesome!

Bearded brothers offers unique, quirky, fun flavors and names–each one of them being heart & delicious in it own right. I marvel at these ingredient lists–one organic ingredient after the next. I love the use of maca in the chocolate bar. When I see maca as an ingredient in a health bar, I always have a good feeling that the brand is in-tune to the superfoods that can really amplify health and fuel the body. Maca is a great endocrine system aid, as it balances and restores hormone levels–which is beneficial to every facet of health, especially recovery.

Since these bars are high in sugar (the good kind–naturally occurring from fruits), I like to pair it with a whole-food based protein smoothie in the morning and a cup of bulletproof coffee (coffee + coconut oil). This way, my macros are balanced. By itself, this bar is a great post-workout or mid-workout (depending on the longevity of your activity) refuel snack. Each of these bars is power packed with energy and nutrients from healthy sources.

Taste-wise, these bars are dense, flavorful and just moist enough to be tasty. My only scrutiny (and this is just personal preference) is the use of dates. They just are not my favorite flavor. Without that taste, these flavor profiles are right on the money.

I’d recommend these bars to all endurance athletes, especially. They are also suitable for those with gluten, soy and/or nut allergies (the Radical Raspberry Lemon is their nut-free option). They’re a clean, organic source of energy and are conveniently packed so that you can throw them into your pant pocket, water pack, or back pack.

Camelbak Mantra Powder Drink Mix Review

______________________________________________

My Thoughts:

The Camelbak brand is invaluable to my family’s vigor for nature and being outdoors. We love all of our Camelbak backpacks as well as the water bottles–of course, I’m a big fan of the fact that they are all BPA-free. This large purple Eddy bottle is perfect for our little girl her fluid capacity gradually increases. It’s a bit bigger than the kid’s Eddy and is great for long days or trips away from our home water filter.

As far as electrolyte replacement and hydration goes, I’m very easily to please. Water does it for me. I drink only water before and after activity, with the occasional squeeze of fresh lemon juice or lemon essential oil into my water bottle. I don’t naturally gravitate towards sports drinks or mixes. If I try them, my standards are pretty high. I want the ingredient list to be chock full of recognizable, whole food ingredients.

In the case of Mantra, it’s tough for me to stand behind a product that does not use organic ingredients. I do believe it to be a large step in the right direction (and better than the big lines of sports drinks–not naming names) for these Camelbak Mantra powder mixes to be free of artificial ingredients, colors and sweeteners– & I like the choice to use stevia in these mixes. However, to make it into my daily routine, these ingredient lists would have to look much more appealing and recognizable.

I appreciate the idea of this product, but in actuality–the ingredients are not up to par for this running girl.

Amrita Endurance Bar Review

20140331-163128.jpg

Amrita Endurance Bars

Overall Rating: images

About Amrita:

“Arshad grew up in India where eating fresh fruits and vegetables was a way of life. After coming to the United States, Arshad became a serious cyclist but when he took six years off active racing he gave up vegetarianism and gained weight. Meanwhile, Arshad’s son was diagnosed with autism and severe gastrointestinal issues.

In order to get their son on track Arshad and his wife started their son on an aggressive gluten-free and dairy-free nutrition program. The nutritional changes helped heal his gastrointestinal issues, allowing for better nutrition absorption, making it easier for him to focus on the other therapies. Now, Ayaan is in a regular classroom doing well academically.

Based on his son’s nutritionally based autism and gastrointestinal recovery and his own drop in cholesterol and weight by following a similar allergy-friendly diet, Arshad became convinced that plant-based nutrition was the right approach for managing inflammation. The significance of reducing one’s allergen load to help the body recover from daily stresses (such as consumption of gluten, dairy, nuts, soy, oils, preservatives, and chemical-containing non-organic foods) became apparent. As a result, he sought to develop snacksfree of these damaging ingredients

During Arshad’s preliminary research of “natural” energy bars on the market, he became concerned about the pervasive use of whey and soy protein, both highly acidic foods. Whey is a byproduct of the cheese-making process and has been shown to cause digestion problems. Soy protein isolate has also been shown to adversely affect thyroids, fertility, hormones, and digestion. Arshad decide to use raw vegan brown rice protein, which boasts a complete amino acid profile exceptionally high in glutamine, argentine, lysine, leucine, and branched-chain amino acids.

Arshad realized that using brown rice protein and dried fruts—such as tropical mangoes, pineapples, and Mejdool dates—together with a rich blend of raw sunflower seeds and sesame seeds would provide essential proteins and fats without the added allergens from nuts, dairy, and soy. As an added bonus, his kids could also take them as part of their peanut-free school lunches!

Arshad launched “Amrita”  in 2012 while working full-time with 3 young kids.  Based on the rapid positive response from farmers markets and stores, Arshad went into Amrita full time in July of 2013.  Amrita in sanskrit means “nectar”.  To really separate Amrita from other energy bars on the market, Arshad packed each bar full of superfoods, such as chia seeds, maca, unsweetened coconut, with delicious hints of vanilla and Himalayan Pink salt for taste and flavor balance.

When making Amrita bars, Arshad ensured ingredients were rich in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and omega-3s, with a good dose of fiber and heaps of easily digestible protein. Of course every ingredient is Non-GMO.  Most importantly, they had to taste amazing, which was easy to deliver based on having  3 picky kids in the house and all their peers as test kitchens.

On average, approximately 70% of the ingredients used to make Amrita bars are organic.

My Thoughts:

The first thing that stands out to me with these Amrita Endurance bars is how pleasant my interaction has been with the founder, Arshad. He has been very helpful, informative and generous in working with me and R.O.O. I really appreciate that aspect of this brand and it will certainly play a role in driving me to continue to support Amrita.

They bars are pretty darn close to 100% awesome. Since they are 70% organic, I’d say that they are 70% awesome. 🙂 In all seriousness, I truly appreciate the fact that Amrita states that they do not use any GMO ingredients. They are refreshingly transparent in admitting that their bars are 70% organic, whereas some brands tend to throw in a small percentage of organic ingredients and then put “organic” in big fat letters on the label. Amrita has recognizable, easy to follow ingredient lists that clearly state which ingredients are organic. As always, entirely organic is the goal. I feel that Amrita is in a very high percentile when compared to other health bars (in regards to quality). In addition to being 70% organic, these bars boast labels that read “raw, plant-based, dairy free, nut-free, gluten-free, soy-free, non-gmo, kosher.” I am concerned about nuts being in my bars (in fact, I prefer them) but I think the main advantage of these bars being free of those foods is that it makes them available to individuals and kids who have food allergies or sensitivities.

Speaking of taste, these bars taste REAL. They taste like their are made of whole food ingredients, because they are. You can pick out the flavors here and there as you eat them. Amrita has nailed a few of their flavor combinations in the Mango Coconut, Pineapple Chia and Apricot Strawberry. All of the flavors are very enjoyable, respectively, but those 3 were the ones I enjoyed most. I love that Amrita makes a bar with Maca. Maca is a superfood (in this case, in powder form) that helps balance and improve hormone production in the body. As someone who has suffered with intense periods and hormonal skin breakouts, I am always looking to eat plant based foods that help address that.

These bars are good when you really need a punch of energy and nutrients. Since all of these bars have a relatively high sugar content (from fruits and natural sources), I wouldn’t recommend them to someone trying to minimize their sugar intake. Or, for those individuals, I’d recommend just sticking to eating these bars only after an intense workout, not regularly throughout the day. I’d imagine these bars would appeal most to active individuals who believe in a plant-based, non-gmo, mostly organic approach to fueling up. These are some of the best tasting and highest quality you can buy and their range of flavors is sure to please any palate or list of dietary restrictions.
