A Pumpkin Spice Latte Recipe that Doesn’t Suck for your Health

a PUMPKIN SPICE LATTE RECIPE that doesn’t suck for your health! 🍂

🍁but tastes so major

🍁is paleo friendly

🍁has no added sugar

🍁contains only simple, real ingredients

 

⌛️INGREDIENTS:

-8oz fairtradeorganicfreerangenaturallocal coffee (hehe)

-1 tbsp pumpkin purée (I used bpa free canned pumpkin from Trader Joes)

-1 tbsp coconut cream (once again from TJ’s)

-8 drops liquid Monkfruit 

-1 capsule Immune Renew mushroom blend

-1/2 tsp cinnamon

-1/2 tsp nutmeg

-1/4 cup unsweet almond milk

 

⌛️PREP:

-combine all ingredients with coffee in whatever the heck kind of order you want.

-for medium awesome, stir them in.

-for large awesome, blender them in with an immersion or fave blender.

Our Experience:

My boyfriend and I live together and we are both pretty big eaters! We do so much cooking at home, both because we enjoy it and it’s more cost effective than going out to eat all the time. Luke coaches Crossfit and ran track in college, so with my food/athletic experience and his knowledge, we are both decently educated in nutrition and do a pretty good job of making it happen for ourselves as far as home-cooked meals go.

But even then, there are times we lack creativity and find ourselves cravings some new dishes and new ideas. I’ve never been signed up for anything similar to Platejoy; we’ve always just been winging it in the kitchen and putting all the healthy foods we like together in a yummy way. I wasn’t sure at first that it would be of use for us since we are health nuts most of the time.

I was so encouraged and surprised to see how many great ideas I have been getting from Platejoy. I really love that you can search for recipes by ingredient based on what we have at home. While I’m not big on abiding by and sticking to exact measurements/recipes, I like getting new concepts for dishes or ways to change up meals I’ve made a bunch of times.

Probably the biggest advantage I see of having Platejoy is that you can acquire a “menu” to use that completely adheres to your style of eating, whether it’s vegan, low-carb, no eggs, etc. This a game changer actually. We strive to eat gluten and dairy free (Luke eats eggs, I limit them) with a focus on healthy fats, veggies and some fruit. It was super easy to  “tell” my Platejoy sign up page that that’s the way we eat. Then voila! It was like ready to go, customized-feeling batch of meals and ideas for us to take and run with. You can even enter your weight loss goals (if you have any) and get a shopping list to take to the grocery store. So many thoughtful + cool little perks.

Primal Kitchen Paleo Collagen Bars + Mayo + Ranch Review

One of my favorite, most influential entrepreneurs + minds + health advocates is Mark Sisson. Mark has many accolades at this point, but I know him from his blog, Mark’s Daily Apple, his brands Primal Blueprint and this one (Primal Kitchen), and have also heard him on the Melissa Ambrosini Podcast.

In many ways, I view his products as “Pre-Approved” by Mark himself. I sorta of intrust him to come up with products that are high quality and are aligned with a lifestyle that largely uses real food and fat as fuel. That has worked well for my body, hormones and overall state of health.

Here are the Primal Kitchen products I tried:

Garlic Aioli Mayonaise w/ Avocado Oil:

Avocado Oil Ranch Dressing:

Where do I start? I’m just so glad that these options are now out there! With the inflammatory effects being so real with heavily processed oils like canola and soybean, finding dressings that are healthy has been such a struggle. Before Primal Kitchen, I would normally just bite the bullet and have crappy dressings, or make my own healthier take at home (which would never taste as good). Luckily now I don’t have to worry about that.

There are so many ways to use these products. My favorite use for the Avocado Oil is to roast vegetables (see above). I’ve also been loving tuna salads lately. (see below) Both the Garlic Aioli Mayo and traditional Avocado Oil Mayo work so good. I also add some hot sauce, sea salt and pepper to taste.

The ranch is….well…it’s really good ranch. And I’m a sauce queen! Give me ALL the dips and I’m happy. Of course I try to keep my diet clean but I do love dressing. This is such a rad, delicious alternative to most of the cruddy ranch dressings you’ll find in stores.

I’ve been a consistent collagen user for close to 2 years now. I’ve noticed a difference in my gut health, as well in my hair + skin + nails. There are so many benefits to incorporating collagen and it may take some people a bit of time to notice a legit difference. Primal Kitchen didn’t have to talk me into trying their collagen bars for that reason!

I found the bars a little bit hard to bite into (they’re pretty dense and hold together real tightly). But besides that, the ingredients are super clean, simple and the taste is satisfying. My favorite is the Dark Chocolate Almond!

What I Think:

After having the priviledge to attend a huge natural products industry convention (Expo West) twice, I completely agree that there are so many incredible products out there being made by brands who are choosing to invest their money in the quality and integrity of their product, versus paying a large amount of money towards advertising and marketing their product. So many great brands go unseen because of this.

I love that Healthy Finds does the research for you and vets the brands ahead of time. The list of brands they work with range from brands that make tea, to healthy granola-type bars, to ketogenic lifestyle supplements. I was impressed by the diversity.

I would compare this to the idea of receiving a subscription box every month that is curated with products for the healthy living lover.

I see the positives being:

-$7 a month is reasonable

-Since they don’t pick the exact products for you, you get to decide which products from each brand you want.

-You shop online for them, so it’s convenient

-You get to discover brands that you might not otherwise ever know about

-The idea of the service is original!

I see a few shortcomings:

-You may end up spending more out of pocket than you’d like to, since the savings is in the form of a $10 or $20 gift card towards your purchase

-Shopping at several different individual online websites to use each gift card is a little inconvenient

I do think the positives outweigh the negatives here, especially if you’re an optimum-health seeking individual who is already shopping online frequently for supplements, nutrition and self care items.

So…What am I Supposed to Eat?

When I’m asked for help in regards to nutrition and/or exercise, I have always feared sounding like a know-it-all. Being that way doesn’t feel natural to me. Speaking from experience and simply explaining how I do things feels incredibly natural, though. That slight changing of gears (in my mindset & approach) in helping others become the healthiest version of themselves has been huge.

Something I’ve witnessed with folks that are looking to become healthier, lose weight, regain vitality &/or boost energy is….

an overwhelming sense of paralysis due to fear & information overload in regards to food.

What’s good for you? What’s not? But, that website said I shouldn’t eat this? So, should I? Why am I breaking out? Is that my body detoxing? Why am I not losing weight? Do I need to go paleo, vegan, gluten free, dairy free blah, blah, blah, blah? Is low fat good? Or should I limit sugar? What about eating frequently throughout the day? Snacks? Eating late? How much protein do I need? Do I need to buy organic food? What’s the big deal about raw food?

Holy cow.

That’s what I mean. Can you say: Oh-ver-load!

Recent discussions in the food world, especially in healthy-minded communities have reached an all-time high–or at least it seems that way. Perhaps, I’m just more aware of it now because I am completely submerged in this world.

Like ANYTHING else in life. I find that the solution is simple & concise:

Ditch rules. Think: Eat to feel good.

Now, I get that many brains will completely come unwired to that idea. There has to be more to it, many must think. Well, I can break it down a little bit farther for those brains. Here are some things I keep in mind & how I would describe my daily eating choices (I feel the healthiest I’ve ever been in my life)…

How I do it:

-Loads of: plants, superfoods, alkaline-forming foods

-Look to healthy fats & protein for fuel (limit refined sugar–it’s more of a cheap thrill. Too much promotes internal acidity. FRUIT is not in this category. Eat your fruit!)

-When grocery shopping, think: organic, raw, fresh.

-Drink lots of water. Basically as much as you can stand. Water helps everything in your body operate more optimally.

-Appreciate food again. Get excited to eat GOOD FOR YOU food. Don’t rush everything. Savor the subtle flavors of everything.

You might be thinking….so what about the dietary restrictions?

I find that (life is like this, too) when I focus my energy on all of those good things going into my body, I don’t have room for the extra junk. Thus, foods like processed grains, dairy, junk food, soda, other miscellaneous garbage food don’t find their way into my daily nutrition often because there’s no room for them. Does that make sense?

It’s like overwhelming your body with “positive,” good foods (like you overwhelm your mind with postitive thoughts to stay happy), so much so, that you don’t leave any room for the negative stuff that sucks the life out of you. You see, it’s all connected. It’s not diet is one isolated aspect & mindset is another isolated aspect of you. The same mantras can & do apply to every facet of your well being. Just apply them and life just becomes easier. You become healthier. That fog lifts. You end up looking in the mirror one day and feeling like you are becoming little Jesica again. Young, spry, capable, healthful without a care in the world. Well, maybe that’s just me. But MAN, it’s an incredible feeling–hard to describe really. AND it all starts with how you fuel your body and your mentality going into it.
